Understanding Adult Safeguarding - Upskilling course for adults working in health and social care

A six-week adult safeguarding course which covers recognising abuse, understanding legal frameworks, reporting procedures, and promoting preventative measures. The course also covers the six key principles of safeguarding: empowerment, prevention, proportionality, protection, partnership, and accountability. Each week will focus on a specific area, building upon the previous week's knowledge. 

A certificate of Attendance and Topics Covered will be given to each participant.

Week 1: Introduction to Safeguarding Adults

  • Definition and Scope:

Define "safeguarding" and explain the scope of adult safeguarding, including various types of abuse (physical, emotional, financial, neglect, etc.). 

  • Vulnerable Adults:

Identify who is considered a vulnerable adult, including those with physical or mental disabilities, and those in specific settings like care homes. 

  • The Six Safeguarding Principles:

Introduce the core principles of empowerment, prevention, proportionality, protection, partnership, and accountability. 

  • Legal Framework:

Briefly introduce the The IOM Safeguarding Act 2018, which sets out legal requirements for safeguarding adults. 

Week 2: Recognizing Abuse and Neglect

  • Indicators of Abuse:

Explore various signs and indicators of different types of abuse, both physical and non-physical.

  • Risk Factors:

Discuss factors that increase the risk of abuse and neglect, such as isolation, mental health conditions, or dependency on others.

  • Case Studies:

Use case studies to illustrate how different types of abuse might manifest. 

Week 3: Reporting Procedures

  • The 5 R's of Safeguarding:

Introduce the core principles of safeguarding: Recognise, Respond, Report, Record, and Refer. 

  • Reporting Concerns:

Explain the importance of reporting suspected abuse and neglect and the different reporting pathways. 

  • Confidentiality:

Discuss the importance of maintaining confidentiality while reporting concerns, and interface with GDPR – Caldicott Principles.

Week 4: Working in a Safeguarding Context

  • Individual Responsibilities:

Outline the responsibilities of individuals in safeguarding vulnerable adults, including those working in care settings.

  • Organisational Responsibilities:

Explain the responsibilities of organizations in safeguarding vulnerable adults.

  • Multi-Agency Working:

Emphasise the importance of multi-agency collaboration in safeguarding and how to work effectively with other professionals. 

Week 5: Mental Capacity Act and Impact.

  • Mental Capacity: Discuss Mental Capacity and its relevance to safeguarding.

  • Making Decisions: Discuss impact of lack of Capacity.

Week 6: Prevention and Promoting Well-being

  • Preventing Abuse:

Focus on preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of abuse and neglect. 

  • Promoting Dignity and Respect:

Emphasise the importance of promoting dignity and respect for all vulnerable adults. 

  • Review and Reflection:

Reflect on the key learnings from the course and discuss ongoing learning and development in the field.
