The Isle of Man is home to the exclusive and iconic Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle road races. What makes riders want to respond to the unique challenge presented by the world’s dangerous circuit, one in which serious injury or death is an ever-present reality? What might be the meanings and values that competitors attribute to the existential risk that the TT constantly poses? Effectively, why do they do it! A well-known term within TT culture is “the edge” (made famous in the video Closer To The Edge). “The edge” is about negotiating boundaries, the dynamic tension between control and chaos; that line between holding it altogether and potential tragedy. Join us on an exhilarating ride as we explore and encounter “the edge” through the experiences and narratives of several leading riders.
