Within the Isle of Man’s rich historical and archaeological landscape, both Peel Castle and Castle Rushen represent our prime monumental structures. St. Patrick’s Isle, the location of Peel Castle, was an important stronghold prior to the construction of the Castle. Architecturally the two strongholds are very different. What is it about their locations that are strategically so significant? Historically and archaeologically, both can only be understood through the lens of the Island’s Viking colonisation and the subsequent inauguration of the Norse Kingdom of Man and The Isles. This story of intrigue is further enhanced by the later struggle between competing Scottish and English interests for control of our Island as a militarily significant outpost within the North Irish Sea. The importance of both Peel Castle and Castle Rushen cannot be viewed in isolation, but rather in terms of these wider influences exerting themselves from the nearby lands of Britain and Ireland. Let the stones of these citadels tell their own story!
