MBSR was developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Stress Reduction Clinic in 1979. The 8-week programme was initially targeted at people with chronic health problems, helping them to cope with the effects of pain, illness and the impact of these conditions on their lives. Today MBSR is taught to people throughout the world who are experiencing challenges in all areas of life. This course introduces a wide range of mindfulness practices, concepts and skills which can help us to both appreciate the richness of the life we have and to acknowledge, accept and skilfully respond to emotional, mental and physical discomfort and distress. Even a few weeks of practising mindfulness can reduce stress and anxiety and help improve sleep, concentration and mood.
